Less than a month before its announced May 25, 2026 launch, Ghana’s future e-Visa system has received Cabinet approval.
In a post shared this weekend on social media, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the Cabinet had approved the new electronic visa policy. The announcement confirms further progress on a project already presented by Ghanaian authorities as one of the tools intended to make travel to the country easier.
“Cabinet has approved our new e-Visa policy. The e-Visa regime covers those traveling to Ghana for business and tourism,” Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said.
The e-Visa launch therefore remains expected in the coming weeks, although authorities have not yet published the full practical details of the application process.
Political approval ahead of Ghana’s e-Visa rollout
In his message, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa framed the reform as a signal of openness to travelers, investors and international visitors. “When others make you feel unwelcome, Ghana says this is your home to invest and to enjoy the beauty of nature,” Ghana’s foreign minister wrote.
He also recalled the wording used by President John Dramani Mahama at his inauguration, when he said that “Ghana is open for business again.”
Ghana’s top diplomat also emphasized the country’s intention to rely on technology to provide a faster and more convenient travel experience, while maintaining what authorities describe as a robust security screening system.
“With smart policies, we are consolidating Ghana’s enviable reputation not only as the most peaceful, friendly and stable country to visit in Africa but as the nation fully utilizing technology to guarantee a fast and convenient travel experience within a robust security vetting architecture,” Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said.
Practical details still pending
Ghanaian authorities have already presented the e-Visa system as a major change to entry formalities, with the aim of simplifying procedures before departure.
Ghana also plans to make the e-Visa free for African travelers, without removing the application requirement or prior checks. Travelers from the continent will therefore still need to complete an online procedure before traveling to Ghana.
Several details still need to be clarified before the system effectively opens. Travelers will need to wait for the official portal to go live, along with confirmation of the nationalities covered, the categories of stay included, processing times, required documents and the price or prices of the electronic visa.
