Azerbaijan is preparing to make entry easier for South Korean travelers.

On June 17, 2026, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov received a delegation in Baku led by Chung Eui-hae, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. Following the meeting, Azerbaijani authorities announced a significant travel facilitation measure: the introduction of a visa-free regime for South Korean passport holders.

According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the exemption will apply to holders of all types of passports issued by the Republic of Korea. The announcement comes as Azerbaijan and South Korea look to deepen cooperation in tourism, trade, investment, transportation, energy, digital development and education.

A visa exemption to strengthen ties between Baku and Seoul

Until now, South Korean travelers have been among the nationalities eligible for Azerbaijan’s electronic visa through the official ASAN Visa portal. That process allows travelers to obtain an online travel authorization before departure.

The visa exemption announced by Baku therefore marks a notable shift. It is expected to make travel to Azerbaijan simpler for South Korean nationals, whether they are visiting for tourism, business, institutional exchanges or academic cooperation.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said the measure would help expand tourism cooperation and strengthen contacts between the people of the two countries. It also comes as Azerbaijan seeks to reinforce its position as a regional hub between Europe and Asia, particularly through the “Middle Corridor,” a transport and connectivity route increasingly promoted by Baku.

Tourism, transport and digital cooperation: More than a visa announcement

The meeting between Jeyhun Bayramov and Chung Eui-hae was not limited to travel issues. The two sides also discussed trade, investment, digital transformation, high technology, education, transportation and energy security.

Several areas of cooperation were highlighted, including vocational training and higher education. The Baku State Vocational Education Center for Industry and Innovation, established on the basis of Korean educational standards, as well as dual-degree programs between universities, were cited as examples of the growing ties between the two countries.

In this context, lifting the visa requirement for South Korean travelers appears to be a practical tool in support of a more active bilateral relationship. For travelers, the measure means lighter formalities. For the authorities, it supports a more visible strategy of tourism, economic and technological openness.

Practical details still awaiting confirmation

The official statement refers to a recent decision to introduce a visa exemption for holders of all types of South Korean passports. At this stage, however, it does not specify the exact start date, the maximum length of visa-free stay, or any conditions that may apply to multiple entries.

Those details are expected to be confirmed by Azerbaijani authorities, including on the consular pages of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or through the official ASAN Visa portal.

South Korean travelers will also still need to comply with Azerbaijan’s general entry and stay rules. As with other foreign nationals, stays of more than 15 days in the country require registration with the State Migration Service, a process usually handled by the accommodation provider or host.

VisasNews Take

This announced visa exemption for South Korean travelers fits into the growing relationship between Azerbaijan and South Korea. For travelers, the benefit will be mainly practical: fewer formalities for trips to Baku, once Azerbaijani authorities confirm the implementation details, including the start date and the authorized length of visa-free stay.
