For several months now, military tensions have persisted along the CambodiaThailand border, particularly in the sensitive areas around the Emerald Triangle.

Following several incidents of cross-border clashes, a ceasefire was signed on July 28, 2025, allowing for a gradual return to calm.

While recent bilateral talks have confirmed a “more stable” climate, the situation remains fragile: military presence has been reinforced, certain areas are still considered sensitive, and ongoing discussions aim to secure the border.

Travelers are advised to remain vigilant, as some land entry points have not yet resumed normal operations, especially for those entering Cambodia with an e-Visa.

Cambodia: two border crossings with Thailand closed to e-Visa holders

The Cambodian electronic visa (e-Visa) remains one of the most convenient ways to enter the country, allowing tourists and business travelers to apply online and avoid embassy visits or long queues upon arrival.

However, not all entry points are currently accessible with an e-Visa, and recent border tensions have led to additional restrictions.

According to the official Cambodian e-Visa portal, as of August 19, 2025, “the following ports are temporarily closed for e-Visa entry until further notice:

  • Cham Yeam (Koh Kong Province)
  • Poipet (Banteay Meanchey Province)”

At this time, travelers holding an e-Visa can enter Cambodia only through:

  • Phnom Penh Techo International Airport (KTI)
  • Siem Reap International Airport (SAI)
  • Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS)
  • Bavet land crossing (border with Vietnam)
  • Tropaeng Kreal land crossing (border with Laos)

As of September 9, 2025, the newly inaugurated Techo International Airport (KTI) has officially replaced the former Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH), which permanently ceased civil operations on September 8, 2025. Techo International Airport is now fully eligible for e-Visa entry.

E-visa holders may exit Cambodia through any of the country’s open official checkpoints.

Many countries are advising their citizens against traveling to areas along the Cambodia–Thailand border due to ongoing security concerns. At this time, there is no official confirmation on whether these restrictions also apply to travelers holding visas issued by Cambodian embassies or consulates.
