Thailand: financial evidence once again required for tourist visas

After dropping this requirement in 2023, Thailand has reinstated the need to show proof of financial means for tourist visa applicants.

As of May 2025, individuals applying for a tourist visa to Thailand must once again provide evidence of sufficient financial resources.

This requirement was originally removed in November 2023 as part of a broader initiative to simplify procedures for international visitors. Its reinstatement marks a slight tightening of entry rules for tourists who are not eligible for visa exemption.

Thailand’s official e-Visa website now states that applicants must present “financial evidence: an amount of no less than 20,000 THB (e.g., bank statements for the last three months, sponsorship letter).”

Whether in the United States, France or Norway, Thai embassies around the world are reporting this change in the procedures for issuing electronic tourist visas.

This requirement comes in addition to the usual documents: a copy of the passport, a recent passport-sized photo, proof of current residence, a round-trip travel ticket, and proof of accommodation in Thailand.

Thailand: 93 countries enjoy visa-free entry for 60 days (but until when?)

Currently, citizens of 93 countries can enter Thailand without a visa for a set period. However, Thai authorities have indicated they are reviewing this policy, particularly the current 60-day maximum stay.

Several sources suggest that a reduction to 30 days is under consideration, though no official decision has been made. The potential revision follows reports of misuse by certain international visitors and is part of a broader reassessment of entry rules. While there are no immediate changes for travelers, updates could be introduced in the coming months.

Mandatory “TDAC” digital arrival card as of May 1, 2025

At the same time, Thailand is moving forward with digitizing its entry procedures. Since May 1, 2025, all international travelers are required to complete the new Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online.

Travelers who are unable to complete the TDAC prior to departure and don’t have internet access upon arrival will be assisted at designated help points at immigration checkpoints. However, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) stresses: “This assistance is intended for exceptional circumstances only. All travellers are strongly encouraged to complete the TDAC online in advance to avoid delays and reduce congestion at entry points.”

The digital TDAC replaces the old paper-based “TM6” form and provides Thai authorities with all necessary entry information, including personal details, travel dates, flight information, and the address of stay in Thailand.

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is now mandatory for all visitors, regardless of whether they are required to obtain a visa.
