Between December 1, 2024 and January 15, 2025, international travelers can obtain a visa on arrival in Ghana without prior approval.
In a move designed to boost tourism and strengthen its ties with the African diaspora, Ghana announces the reintroduction of its temporary visa-on-arrival policy for international visitors.
From December 1, 2024 to January 15, 2025, tourists can enter the country without the need for visa pre-approval, a move that forms part of the “December in GH” campaign and the “Beyond the Return” strategic initiative.
The policy has been officially communicated by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and validated by the Ministry of Transport. It reflects Ghana’s commitment to offering a simplified travel experience accessible to all, attracting an increased flow of visitors eager to discover its unique end-of-year festivities and vibrant cultural heritage.
A measure at the heart of tourism by the African diaspora
Launched in 2019 with the “Year of Return” initiative, which celebrated the historic links between Africa and its diaspora, the “Beyond the Return” campaign continues to strengthen these connections. According to the Ministry of Transport press release, this new visa-on-arrival measure is an essential step in attracting greater numbers of Africans in the diaspora and international travelers.
Akwasi Agyeman, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, underlines “the significance of this new visa regime” and urges travelers “to take advantage of this exceptional opportunity and fully immerse themselves in the exciting December in GH festivities.”
A rich calendar of cultural events
The “December in GH” campaign is a highlight for tourism in Ghana. This annual event offers a variety of festivals, musical performances, art exhibitions and traditional celebrations organized across the country. With this pre-departure visa waiver, Ghana hopes to attract more visitors to explore its rich culture and unique traditions.
“December in GH” is not only a celebration, but also a moment of reconnection for members of the African diaspora, emphasizing the values of community and sharing. Since 2019, this event has reinforced Ghana’s reputation as a destination of choice for end-of-year celebrations.
A worldwide invitation to Ghana
International visitors do not need to apply for a visa before departing for Ghana, but can obtain one directly on arrival in the country. This directive aims to ensure a smooth transition for travelers, avoiding administrative complications on arrival.
The Minister of Transport, Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, called on all airlines to quickly update their systems to implement the new policy.
With this initiative, Ghana opens its doors wide to the world, inviting tourists to discover its legendary hospitality and cultural dynamism. Travelers are encouraged to visit the official December in GH website for more information on events and travel arrangements.
