Vietnam announces the renewal of its unilateral visa waiver policy for citizens of 12 countries until 2028. This measure is designed to boost the country’s tourist appeal and encourage international trade.
In a strategic decision aimed at boosting its tourist appeal and diplomatic relations, the Vietnamese government has announced the extension of visa-free travel for citizens of 12 European and Asian countries.
This measure, initially launched in August 2023, will be effective from March 15, 2025 to March 14, 2028, and will enable travelers from the countries concerned to continue to enjoy a 45-day visa-free stay in Vietnam.
12 countries qualify for Vietnam visa waiver until 2028
The twelve countries concerned by this exemption are France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Out goes Belarus, which initially qualified for this unilateral visa exemption.
This decision, formalized on March 7, 2025 via resolution no. 44/NQ-CP, replaces the previous provisions, which expire on March 15, 2025.
By granting this extension, Vietnam is reaffirming its commitment to facilitating the entry of international travellers, a measure particularly beneficial to its tourism sector. Since the post-pandemic reopening of its borders, the country has relied on a more flexible entry policy to attract more visitors and boost its economy.
A new visa exemption for Swiss, Czechs and Poles
In keeping with its policy of openness, Vietnam has also recently introduced a temporary visa exemption for citizens of Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland.
This provision, which came into force on March 1, 2025, allows nationals of these three countries to visit Vietnam visa-free until December 31, 2025, for stays of up to 45 days exclusively for tourism.
Although limited in time, this initiative testifies to the Vietnamese authorities’ desire to explore new tourism and economic opportunities with these European nations.
A strategy of openness and international cooperation
In addition to its tourism implications, this initiative reflects a desire to deepen diplomatic and economic relations with the beneficiary countries. By facilitating access to Vietnamese territory, the government is encouraging trade, investment and the strengthening of cultural ties with these partner nations.
Regardless of the type of passport or the purpose of their stay, travellers must comply with the entry conditions laid down by Vietnamese law. This will enable them to make the most of their visit, whether for tourism, business or family reasons.
At the same time, Vietnam is continuing to develop its electronic visa system (e-Visa), which enables travellers from all over the world to obtain a visa online for stays of up to 90 days, with single or multiple entries, further facilitating access to the country.
A strong signal for the development of Vietnamese tourism
Vietnam has set itself ambitious targets for international tourism, aiming to welcome 23 million foreign visitors by 2025. The extension of this visa waiver is part of a series of reforms designed to simplify administrative formalities and offer a smoother, more attractive travel experience.
By adopting a policy of openness, Vietnam hopes to position itself as one of Southeast Asia’s must-visit destinations, capitalizing on its spectacular scenery, rich culture and renowned hospitality.
With this announcement, the country is sending a strong signal to international travelers: Vietnam is more than ever ready to welcome them!
