Mozambique temporarily suspends ETA requirement for visa-exempt travelers

Due to technical difficulties, Mozambique has temporarily suspended the recently implemented Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for citizens of 29 visa-exempt countries.

Since early May, Mozambique had required travelers of 29 visa-exempt countries to notify authorities of their arrival at least 48 hours in advance by submitting an ETA application.

While this procedure had been optional since 2023, it was recently made mandatory to help the government better anticipate travel flows and enhance border security. However, the new measure only lasted a few days…

In a press release released on May 16, 2025, Mozambican authorities announced the immediate but temporary suspension of the ETA requirement.

Technical issues prompt suspension of ETA system

The reason? Technical difficulties with the registration system.

According to the National Immigration Service (SENAMI), the platform does not currently allow for the proper submission of data, disrupting the process and causing inconvenience for travelers. In light of this, the government has decided to pause the ETA requirement.

“This decision comes as a result of technical constraints found in the registration system, which have prevented normal access and submission of data by citizens covered by the measure,” the official statement reads.

Authorities added that, “although this obligation arises from the aforementioned legal provision, which regulates the regime for facilitating the entry of foreigners into Mozambique, SENAMI believes it is necessary to safeguard the rights of users during the period in which technical improvements are being made to the system.”

Travelers can temporarily enter Mozambique without an ETA

Once the technical issues are resolved, the government plans to reinstate the ETA requirement and will notify travelers when the platform is fully operational again.

“While work is underway to fully restore the functionality of the platform, the requirement for prior communication will be temporarily suspended. After this period, and as soon as the technical conditions are met, a new official communication will be made regarding the reestablishment of the measure,” SENAMI stated.

Until then, travelers from the following 29 countries may enter Mozambique without having to submit an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA):

  • Belgium, Canada, China, Côte d’Ivoire, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States.
