Mozambique: ETA now mandatory for travelers from 29 visa-exempt countries

Mozambique now requires travelers from 29 visa-exempt countries to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This online process must be completed at least 48 hours prior to departure.

Mozambique announces a new measure for nationals of 29 visa-exempt countries: presentation of an approved ETA on arrival becomes mandatory.

On April 24, 2025, Mozambique’s National Immigration Service published an official notice explaining that these visa-exempt travelers must register online at least 48 hours before their trip.

According to the authorities, this obligation stems from article 4 of decree no. 10/2023 of March 31, 2023, on the entry into force of visa-free travel for citizens of 29 countries, and “is part of the Mozambican Immigration Services’ ongoing efforts to enhance border control, ensure national security, and facilitate orderly and regular tourism”.

Previously optional, this electronic travel formality is now required for legal entry into Mozambique.

Mozambique ETA: Online registration and payment upon arrival

To obtain an ETA for Mozambique, travelers must register through the official platform at www.evisa.gov.mz. The process involves submitting personal information, passport details, and specifics about the planned stay.

Although not a visa application, this registration serves as a legal pre-travel notification and is essential for entry approval. Once approved, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) can be downloaded from the portal a few minutes after the application has been finalized. The document is valid for 60 days from the date of approval.

Upon arrival in Mozambique, visa-exempt travelers must pay an administrative fee of 650 Mozambican Meticais (MZN), which is roughly equivalent to €9 or $10 USD, payable either in local currency or in a foreign currency recognized by Mozambican authorities.

Mozambique’s immigration authorities emphasize the importance of strict compliance with this new regulation. Failure to register or pay the required fee will be interpreted as an implicit refusal of entry. This may result in being denied boarding at the departure airport or refused admission upon arrival at a Mozambican airport or border crossing.

Since May 1, 2023, tourists and business travelers from 29 countries have been allowed to enter Mozambique visa-free for up to 30 days, with the possibility of extending their stay for another 30 days once in-country.

The ETA requirement now applies to citizens of the following 29 countries traveling to Mozambique:

  1. Belgium
  2. Canada
  3. China
  4. Côte d’Ivoire
  5. Denmark
  6. Finland

In addition to presenting the approved ETA (either printed or on a mobile device), travelers must also have a passport valid for at least six months and documentation supporting the purpose of their visit:

  • For tourism: Proof of accommodation, a return ticket, and evidence of sufficient funds.
  • For business travel: An invitation letter from the host organization, a return ticket, and proof of financial means.

  1. Yes, same. Do we have to apply for an eVisa? Even though we only want an ETA as we are visa-exempt? Also, what proof of financial means do they want? Bank statement maybe?

    • Hi John,
When you select your citizenship, purpose and length of stay, the ETA process is automatically triggered, with the price of 650 MZN in the bottom right-hand corner, to be paid on arrival in Mozambique.
