Ghana: President wants to speed up introduction of e-Visa

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has called for the accelerated implementation of the electronic visa (e-Visa) as part of the modernization of the country’s border services.

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama took advantage of the inauguration of a new aviation control center in Accra to send a strong message: it is time to accelerate the introduction of the electronic visa in Ghana.

This commitment is part of a broader program to digitize border management services.

A showcase for aviation modernization

The brand new Air Navigation Services (ANS) building at Kotoka International Airport marks a decisive step forward for Ghana’s aviation sector.

This state-of-the-art center is now the nerve center of air navigation in the country. It houses a multi-agency command center that integrates advanced passenger surveillance systems, such as API (Advanced Passenger Information) and PNR (Passenger Name Record), in accordance with international standards.

This system gives authorities greater visibility of people entering and leaving the country, while improving border security.

A presidential push for e-Visa in Ghana

But beyond this technical infrastructure, President John Dramani Mahama is looking further ahead, explaining that “the introduction of the API and PNR systems provides a strong digital platform on which other critical services can be integrated.”

In his speech, he instructed the ministers of transport, interior, and foreign affairs to work together to extend this digital platform to the entire country, including land and sea border posts, and above all to accelerate the introduction of the electronic visa, which has been in the works for several years.

“I’m directing the honorable ministers responsible for Interior, Transport and Foreign Affairs to collaborate to ensure that this platform is expanded to enable us quickly implement the long awaited e-Visa services for the country,” said the Ghanaian president.

Simplifying procedures to attract more visitors

John Dramani Mahama added that “the e-Visa system will ease visa application processes. It will reduce paperwork and bureaucracy. It will support tourism and make Ghana an even more attractive destination for business.”

The introduction of an electronic visa system is therefore part of a strategy to facilitate travel and boost the economy. It aims to simplify visa procedures, reduce administrative procedures, and encourage the arrival of tourists, investors, and businesspeople.

With an electronic visa, applicants will be able to complete all the necessary steps online, a major step forward that will bring Ghana closer to the most modern international practices.

“The future of travel is digital and Ghana must not be left behind,” insisted John Dramani Mahama.
