Benin announces the introduction of a free 72-hour visa for cruise passengers, a measure designed to encourage maritime tourism.
The government of Benin has announced a major measure to boost maritime tourism: cruise passengers stopping over in the country will now be granted a 72-hour visa waiver.
This measure, reserved for international visitors accompanied by approved travel agencies, “aims to facilitate the reception of international travelers and enhance the attractiveness of the destination for shipping companies operating in West Africa,” announced the authorities.
Free visas in Benin: a strategy to boost international appeal
This policy is part of Benin’s desire to attract more high-end cruise ships. Since the beginning of 2025, several prestigious ships, such as the Seabourn Sojourn and the Crystal Symphony, have already dropped anchor in the port of Cotonou.
This opening up of the port will make it easier for visitors to visit major tourist sites such as Ouidah, Porto-Novo, Ganvié and Cotonou, the country’s capital.
A free three-day visa for Benin: an advantage for shipping companies
By simplifying the process, Benin hopes to attract more shipowners. The port authorities and the Benin Tourism Agency are working hand in hand to put the country on the itineraries of international cruise lines. The goal is to position Benin as an essential stopover in West Africa.
“The formalities have been simplified to ensure a better travel experience from the moment of arrival,” explains the Beninese government.
What visa do travelers who do not benefit from this exemption need?
For all visitors who are not covered by this measure, the Benin e-Visa remains the preferred option.
It is entirely paperless and can be applied for online on the official portal: www.evisa.bj.
Three options are available:
- Single-entry e-Visa (30 days): $50
- Multiple-entry e-Visa (30 days): $75
- Multiple-entry e-Visa (90 days): $100
Processing usually takes 24 to 48 hours, and the document is sent by email. This secure and fast system is intended for air, land, or sea travelers who are not eligible for the 72-hour free visa for cruise passengers.
