The British Virgin Islands has modernized its immigration procedures with the introduction of a digital Embarkation/Disembarkation Card. From now on, travelers must complete an online form before arrival, facilitating checks and reducing waiting times.
Since January 1, 2025, the British Virgin Islands has modernized its entry and exit process by introducing a digital Embarkation/Disembarkation Card.
This initiative aims to facilitate formalities for travelers and improve data collection to enhance border security and develop new tourism policies.
Travelers are now invited to complete their E.D. card online by visiting bviedcard.gov.vg. The form includes sections on personal information, travel details, family members (if applicable) and various declarations.
The Online E.D. Card can be completed up to 72 hours before the date of travel, or even on arrival, but it is imperative that it be completed before applying for entry with an immigration officer.
Once the form has been successfully submitted, a confirmation e-mail is sent, including a two-page document with a QR code for presentation to immigration and customs officials on arrival.
Modernization to streamline travelers’ entry to the BVI
According to Nadia Demming-Hodge, the Acting Director General of Immigration, this transformation, while still in progress, was deemed necessary to facilitate processes for travelers arriving at ports of entry.
“The new system will simultaneously improve and enhance the department’s data collection capabilities that will later be utilised to support border security initiatives and new tourism policies,” explains Nadia Demming-Hodge.
This transition to digital is part of the Immigration Department’s drive to improve the traveler experience and speed up procedures at ports of entry.
In addition, the department plans to launch a specific initiative for chartered ships and aircraft, to offer them a more efficient customs clearance process, thus significantly reducing waiting times for their passengers.
What is the visa policy of the British Virgin Islands?
Although the BVI is under British sovereignty, it has its own immigration policy, different from that of the United Kingdom.
The BVI applies a specific visa policy depending on the nationality of travelers. Nationals of many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union, can enter without a visa or ETA for up to 30 days. An extension of up to 6 months is possible, subject to application to the local immigration authorities.
Travelers from countries requiring a visa must submit an application before departure. However, nationals of countries who require a visa for the BVI, but who also hold a visa valid for more than six months issued by the UK, USA or Canada, and who are traveling for business, tourism or other related reasons, may enter and remain in the territory for a maximum period of six months.
In addition, all persons entering the country must hold a valid passport, a return ticket and proof of sufficient financial means for their stay.
