It’s official: Myanmar no longer imposes entry health measures related to COVID-19.
Although minimal, these measures have now been officially removed. The last remaining travel restrictions applied by Myanmar were lifted on July 8, 2024.
“Due to the efforts to increase COVID-19 vaccination coverage worldwide, including in Myanmar, and the public’s adoption of new normal setting, the incidence of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly decreased”, stated the Myanmar Ministry of Immigration and Population.
In their statement published yesterday on the electronic visa issuance portal, Myanmar authorities announced that “with the aim of relaxing health regulations to promote the development of the tourism and trade sectors, “Public Health Requirements for Travelers Entering Myanmar Through International Airports, Seaports and Cross Border PoEs (1-3-2024)” have been revoked by the Ministry of Health”.
Changes for traveling to Myanmar
There aren’t drastic changes since the country had already greatly simplified its health requirements.
Last March, Myanmar’s health authorities relaxed entry conditions by removing the requirement to present health insurance upon arrival.
However, a few measures remained in place, such as temperature checks for travelers at entry points and the responsibility of travelers to cover costs for testing, isolation, and medical treatment during their stay.
Tourists were also required to report any COVID-19 symptoms to health authorities during their stay in Myanmar.
These constraints have now been lifted.
A visa is required to enter Myanmar
Except for citizens of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam, all travelers need a visa to enter Myanmar.
For the past 10 years, tourists from 100 countries have been able to apply for an electronic visa (e-Visa) to stay up to 28 days in Myanmar. The cost of a tourist e-Visa is $50 USD.
Business travelers from 54 countries are eligible for an e-Visa allowing them to stay up to 70 days in Myanmar. The cost of this electronic visa is $70 USD.
The following four entry checkpoints can be used by e-Visa holders to enter Myanmar:
- Yangon International Airport
- Mandalay International Airport
- Nay Pyi Taw International Airport
- Kawthaung International Checkpoint (border with Thailand)
