Turkmenistan, whose entry requirements have historically ranked among the most restrictive in Central Asia and remain particularly strict by international standards, now officially has an electronic visa system that could make travel to the country significantly easier.
In an announcement published on September 30, 2026, the State Migration Service said that a system for issuing electronic visas (e-Visas) would be launched on October 1, 2026.
According to the Turkmen authorities, the new procedure is intended to save foreign travelers time, allow documents to be handled electronically and simplify immigration formalities.
Turkmenistan officially launches its e-Visa system
The rollout comes one day after a briefing held by the State Migration Service in Ashgabat.
The meeting focused on the digitalization of immigration procedures, international cooperation, the e-Visa and online registration for foreign nationals. It brought together representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations, as well as Turkmen ambassadors and consuls stationed abroad.
During the briefing, the State Migration Service presented the system designed to electronically process and issue visas authorizing foreign nationals and stateless persons to enter Turkmenistan.
A report from Turkmenistan’s state news agency on the meeting also confirms the work being carried out on the e-Visa and online registration for foreign nationals. Diplomatic missions were briefed on the new procedures so they can provide information to travelers.
The legal groundwork for the change had already been laid. In April 2025, Turkmenistan amended its migration law to formally introduce electronic visas.
A dedicated e-Visa application portal appears to have been created
The State Migration Service says its new system will allow visas to be issued electronically, but its latest announcements do not yet clearly identify the direct web address travelers should use to submit an application.
Travel-document specialists at VisasNews and Action-Visas have identified an official subdomain, visa.migration.gov.tm, which appears to be the portal intended for e-Visa applications.
The address is part of the official migration.gov.tm domain, but the portal remains difficult to access at the time of our checks. Detailed application requirements therefore cannot yet be reliably reviewed.
Key details still need to be clarified, including eligible nationalities, available visa categories, required documents, fees, processing times, visa and permitted-stay validity periods, and any restrictions on authorized ports of entry.
Government announcements therefore confirm that the e-Visa issuance system officially goes into service on October 1, 2026, although they do not yet provide enough information to describe the complete application process for foreign travelers.
An official tool is also available to verify e-Visas
Alongside the apparent application portal, the State Migration Service website includes an official page dedicated to electronic visa verification.
This section is separate from the portal that appears to be intended for applications and is designed to allow information relating to an issued e-Visa to be checked.
The existence of this verification tool confirms that a dedicated infrastructure is being put in place around the new electronic visa, even though not all of the system’s features are yet easily accessible from outside Turkmenistan.
The e-Visa should eliminate the need for a prior invitation
The launch of the e-Visa could significantly change one of the most distinctive features of Turkmenistan’s entry procedures.
The 2025 amendments to the country’s migration law provide that an invitation does not need to be arranged or issued in order to obtain an electronic visa.
Until now, tourists traveling to Turkmenistan generally had to obtain a letter of invitation in advance. The document had to be approved by the State Migration Service and was usually arranged through a local travel agency or organization before the traveler could apply for a visa.
The new electronic system therefore opens the door to a substantially simpler process.
However, the operational rules for the portal will need to be published before it becomes clear which travelers and which types of stay will actually qualify for an invitation-free application.
Foreign-national registration is also moving online
The electronic visa is not the only immigration procedure being digitalized by the Turkmen authorities.
The State Migration Service has also introduced an online registration system for foreign nationals and stateless persons staying in the country.
Available through the official rgstr.migration.gov.tm portal, the service allows several stay-related procedures to be completed remotely, including registration at a place of residence, extensions of that registration and deregistration.
Foreign nationals, as well as individuals and organizations hosting them, can therefore complete these procedures online without visiting a State Migration Service office.
The system was already operational before the launch of the e-Visa and represents another major part of Turkmenistan’s move toward digital immigration procedures. Local sources had already confirmed in August 2026 that the system was being used for registrations, extensions and deregistrations.
Practical details are now awaited
The October 1 launch marks the transition of Turkmenistan’s e-Visa from a planned system to an officially operational program.
Several questions nevertheless remain for travelers. The authorities have not yet made all eligibility criteria and practical application requirements readily available.
Full access to visa.migration.gov.tm should provide more clarity on eligible nationalities, the different e-Visa categories and the documents applicants will need to submit.
VisasNews will update this information as soon as the application process can be tested in full.
VisasNews Take
Turkmenistan’s electronic visa is no longer just a proposal: the State Migration Service has officially set October 1, 2026, as the launch date. The reform could significantly simplify access to the country, particularly because the law provides for e-Visas to be issued without a prior invitation. However, the exact eligibility requirements still need to be clarified, and full access to the new application portal remains limited.
