Travelers currently obtaining an e-Visa for Laos have significantly more time than usual to use their travel authorization.
Since April 2026, travel-document experts at VisasNews and Action-Visas have observed that notifications accompanying electronic visas approved by Lao authorities announce a temporary extension of their validity period.
While the standard validity period is 60 days, authorities are currently allowing travelers 180 days from the date of approval to enter Laos.
The measure remains in effect in September 2026, as confirmed by new approvals issued in recent days.
Approval notifications now state a 180-day validity period
The messages sent to travelers with their approval letters are particularly clear.
They first reiterate the standard rule: “The standard validity period of a Lao eVisa approval letter is sixty (60) days from the date of approval.”
Authorities then explain that “in light of current travel conditions affecting certain regions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has introduced a temporary facilitative measure to extend the validity period to one hundred and eighty (180) days from the date of approval.”
In practical terms, an e-Visa covered by this measure can therefore be used to enter Laos for up to 180 days after approval, instead of the standard 60-day period.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also makes clear that the measure is temporary. Approval notifications state: “Please note that this measure is subject to review and may be amended in accordance with decisions of the relevant authorities without prior notice.”
No end date has been announced at this stage.
180 days to enter Laos, but still only 30 days of stay
The change applies only to the validity of the e-Visa approval letter, meaning the period during which the traveler can use the authorization to enter Laos.
It should not be confused with the permitted length of stay in the country.
The Lao tourist e-Visa remains a single-entry visa allowing a stay of up to 30 days.
In other words, a traveler whose approval letter benefits from the temporary 180-day validity period has more flexibility in choosing an entry date, but the 180 days do not represent the permitted length of stay.
The official Lao eVisa portal continues to state that the maximum authorized stay is 30 days.
The measure is very likely linked to disruptions in the Middle East
Lao authorities do not explicitly identify the regions referred to in their approval notifications. They simply cite “current travel conditions affecting certain regions.”
However, the timeline strongly suggests that the facilitative measure was introduced in response to international travel disruptions caused by developments in the Middle East.
As early as March 2, 2026, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed serious concern about the situation in the Middle East.
A few days later, Laos also took part in a special ASEAN meeting devoted to developments in the region.
At the same time, air travel disruptions were affecting several major Gulf hubs that play a key role in connecting Europe and Asia, with flights being canceled, rerouted or rescheduled.
It was in the following weeks that VisasNews and Action-Visas travel-document experts began seeing the new 180-day validity period in Lao e-Visa approval notifications.
A link with those disruptions therefore appears highly likely, although the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not, to date, issued a public statement formally establishing that connection.
The official portal still says 60 days
There is one important inconsistency: the information sent directly to e-Visa holders still does not match the information publicly displayed on the official portal.
The Lao eVisa FAQ continues to state that an e-Visa is valid for a maximum of 60 days after the approval letter is received.
The official e-Visa terms and conditions also continue to state a 60-day validity period.
The public-facing pages of the portal therefore do not appear to have been updated to reflect the temporary facilitative measure currently being applied to approved applications.
This discrepancy can understandably cause confusion: a traveler consulting only the official website will still see a 60-day validity period, while the notification accompanying their own approved e-Visa may state 180 days.
The dates on the issued e-Visa remain the key reference
In this situation, travelers should first check the information shown on their own approval letter and in the notification received when the e-Visa was issued.
Those documents indicate the period actually granted for use of the e-Visa.
Because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explicitly describes the 180-day measure as temporary, there is no guarantee that it will continue to apply to future applications.
An e-Visa issued at a later date could therefore revert to a 60-day validity period if authorities decide to end the facilitation.
What should travelers check?
To avoid confusion, travelers should distinguish between three separate dates or periods:
- the e-Visa approval date;
- the deadline for entering Laos shown on the approval letter;
- the authorized length of stay, which remains 30 days from the date of entry.
The temporary 180-day validity period mainly provides additional flexibility when a trip has to be postponed or reorganized. It does not allow travelers to remain in Laos for 180 days or make multiple entries using the same e-Visa.
The official portal also continues to instruct travelers to print their e-Visa approval letter and present it to immigration officials upon arrival.
Given the temporary nature of the measure and the current discrepancy between the general information published on the portal and the instructions sent with approved applications, e-Visa holders should therefore rely primarily on the dates shown on the document actually issued to them.
Separately from the e-Visa, travelers should also complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF), Laos’ digital arrival and departure form, which must be submitted online within the three days before arrival or departure at checkpoints where the system is in use.
