Could U.S. passports become collector’s items?

As the United States prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in July 2026, the State Department is working on a limited-edition version of the U.S. passport. The document will retain its usual function as a travel document, but with a design created specifically for the occasion.

One graphic detail, in particular, is drawing attention: the commemorative version is expected to feature an image of Donald Trump, in a design inspired by symbols of American independence.

The announcement is part of the “America250” celebrations, organized to mark a quarter millennium since the United States became an independent nation.

A limited-edition passport to “commemorate this historic occasion”

“As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed U.S. Passports to commemorate this historic occasion,” Tommy Pigott, U.S. Department of State’ spokesperson, wrote on X.

According to that statement, the passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery, while retaining the same security features as current U.S. passports.

Based on the visuals presented, one of the most visible elements of the commemorative passport will be the inclusion of an image of Donald Trump inside the document. His portrait appears to be shown on a page inspired by the Declaration of Independence, alongside his signature in gold.

Another page would reference the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, while the passport’s front and back covers would also be adapted for this special edition. The back cover may include a version of the American flag with 13 stars, a reference to the original 13 colonies, with the number “250” at the center.

A “collector’s” passport, but still valid for travel

Despite its commemorative appearance, this limited edition should not be viewed as a simple piece of memorabilia intended for collectors.

It is still an official U.S. passport, expected to retain the same security features as passports currently issued by the United States. Holders should therefore be able to use it as a real travel document, under the same conditions as a standard U.S. passport.

Practical details have yet to be clarified, including the exact number of passports that will be available and the conditions for obtaining one. According to information shared with U.S. media, the edition would be offered at no additional cost to U.S. citizens applying in person at the Washington Passport Agency shortly before July 4, 2026.

The rollout of this special edition is expected to coincide with celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. July 4, 2026, will fall exactly 250 years after the adoption of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
