Ethiopia lowers the price of its tourist visa

The price of an electronic tourist visa for Ethiopia has just been reduced by US$20.

Good news for the wallets of travelers to Ethiopia: the price of the electronic tourist visa (e-Visa) has just dropped.

Whereas it used to cost US$82, the price of an e-Visa for tourism in Ethiopia is now US$62.

The last revision of the ministerial online visa fee was in February 2023, when the Ethiopian government decided to increase all its visas by US$30.

The other visa categories (Investment, Workshop/Conference, Journalist and Visa extension) remain at the same prices.

As a reminder, since last November, Ethiopia no longer issues 90-day long-stay electronic tourist visas, and only offers a visa for stays of up to 30 days in the country.

How do I apply for an electronic visa for Ethiopia ?

To obtain an electronic visa for Ethiopia via the official government portal, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Access the official website

  • Open your browser and go to https://www.evisa.gov.et.
  • On the home page, you’ll find a button entitled “Apply Now”. Click on it to begin the application process.

Step 2: Select visa type

  • Choose the type of visa you wish to apply for. The proposed visa categories are: Journalist Visa, Workshop/Conference Visa, Tourist Visa and Investment Visa.
  • Select the desired visa validity: the Tourist Visa is valid for 30 days and allows a single entry into Ethiopia.

Step 3: Fill in the application form

  • Complete the online application form, providing all the information requested, such as :
    • Expected date of arrival in Ethiopia
    • Country and city of origin
    • Contact details in Ethiopia
    • Last name and first name(s)
    • Date of birth
    • Nationality
    • Passport details (number, date of issue, expiry date)
    • E-mail address
  • Check all information before proceeding to the next step to avoid any errors that could delay the processing of your application.
  • Upload the required documents, i.e. a copy of the passport and a recent photo (follow the instructions on the site regarding document size and quality).

Step 4: Pay visa fees

  • Select the payment method from the available options.
  • Pay the visa fee. The amount depends on the type of visa requested.

Step 5: Receive your e-visa

  • Once you have submitted your application and made payment, you will receive two confirmation e-mails indicating that your application has been paid for, and that it has been received and is being processed.
  • Ethiopian e-Visa can take up to 3 working days to process, and once approved, your e-Visa will be emailed to you. Download and print the visa for presentation on arrival in Ethiopia.
  • You can also check the status of your e-Visa application directly from the government portal and download it.
  • The validity of the e-Visa starts from the date of entry into Ethiopia you selected when you applied online, not from the date of issue.

Step 6: Present visa on arrival

  • On arrival in Ethiopia at Addis Ababa Bole Airport, present your printed e-visa together with your passport to immigration for entry into the country.

Important information

  • e-Visa holders can only enter Ethiopia via Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.
  • Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your return date from Ethiopia.
  • The e-visa is valid for one entry only (except for the Investment visa).
  • Check your inbox regularly, including spam folders, so you don’t miss out on important communications about your application.

    • Yet this is what the government portal and many embassies indicate.
In practice, it is possible that some immigration officers will accept the e-Visa at the country’s land checkpoints 🤷
